Reef Relief

Coral reefs are one of the most important ecosystems on the planet, supporting more than 25% of marine life and one billion people worldwide. Our reefs are estimated to have a total global value of £6 trillion per year, because of their provision of food and medicine, contribution to tourism and the coastal protection they provide.

We know that coral reefs are under serious threat from climate change and pollution. But another danger to coral is the sunscreen we wear.

Over 14,000 tons of sunscreen wash off us and into our oceans every year. The problem? Over 80% of sunscreens contain chemicals that bleach and kill coral. Scientists estimate that if we don’t make sustainable changes, 90% of the world’s reefs could be functionally extinct by 2030.

So with sunscreen brand Stream2Sea and UN marine advisor Professor Michael Sweet, we developed Reef Relief, the world’s first sunscreen that’s not only reef-safe (harmful chemicals removed) it actively feeds and nourishes coral. No sunscreen has ever done this, and no skincare product proven to be as beneficial to coral as Reef Relief.

Truth Well Told: We had soft-launched the product in 2023 but wanted to ensure that it was sound and lived up to its promise, so we brought in Professor Sweet, the UN’s marine advisor, to partner with us help us conduct thorough testing of the product over the last several months. What we have found Reef Relief boosts healthy coral growth by up to 8% in some species. Along with the product, we are encouraging the industry to become part of the change as well and introduced a whole new certification marque for sunscreens—not just SPF, but RPF–Reef Protection Factor.
